Creotech partners with ESA to monitor space debris – initial phase project worth over €100,000 launches

space debris in Earth orbit, dangerous junk orbiting around the blue planet

Creotech Instruments S.A., Poland’s leading space company listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, signed a new contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) for the Space Based Observations Mission (SBOM). The project aims to develop a space mission concept for monitoring orbital debris around Earth, with plans to launch a satellite into low Earth orbit by 2028. The initial Phase 0-A, where Creotech Instruments leads a consortium with Sybilla Technologies, is valued at EUR 125,000, with Creotech’s share exceeding EUR 100,000. The 12-month project kicks off in January 2025.

“In this innovative venture, Creotech will design a space debris monitoring mission utilizing our proprietary HyperSat platform.  Following the completion of the initial phase, we plan to engage in further discussions with ESA regarding subsequent project stages, including manufacturing the satellite,” said Grzegorz Brona, President of the Management Board (CEO) of Creotech Instruments S.A.

The Space Based Observations Mission (SBOM) will employ an optical telescope mounted on a small satellite to monitor orbital debris. The mission’s primary objective is to detect millimeter-sized objects in low Earth orbit (LEO) and meter-sized objects in geostationary orbit (GEO), enabling accurate assessment of risks posed by the growing volume of space debris.  This initiative will complement existing ground-based observation capabilities and continue the work of ESA’s VISDOMS mission under the Space Safety Programme (S2P).

SBOM represents another milestone in Creotech Instruments’ growing collaboration with ESA and reinforces Poland’s position in the global space technology sector.
