Communications are one of the most important elements of any satellite mission. They determine whether data from orbit reaches Earth safely and whether operators retain full control over the satellite. As the number of satellites and applications requiring special data protection grows, so too does the demand for communication systems that are secure, flexible and efficient.
CERBER is Creotech Instruments’ response to these needs. As part of the project, we are developing a software-defined radio (SDR) transceiver operating in the S and X bands. Thanks to the SDR architecture, radio parameters can be modified and updated at the software level, even after the satellite has been launched into orbit. The solution is being developed to the SpaceVPX standard and supports CCSDS protocols, which facilitates its integration with both small satellites and more demanding space communication systems.
The work involves designing the radio architecture, implementing the CCSDS standard, developing data encryption and authentication mechanisms, and analysing the potential for applying post-quantum cryptography. We are also preparing an environment for testing and validating prototypes under conditions similar to those encountered during actual space operations. CERBER will expand Creotech’s product portfolio and is aimed at satellite integrators and operators, space agencies, public institutions, the security sector and commercial customers.
